Burstenhaus Redecker

Burstenhaus Redecker, Brush Makers
Germany
Having lost his sight as a child, Friedrich ‘Friedel’ Redecker trained as a brush maker in Germany before establishing his own workshop in the town of Versmold. Working by hand with natural fibres, wood and traditional techniques, he produced brushes renowned for their quality and durability, earning the trust of local households and laying the foundations for what would become one of Germany’s most respected heritage brands.
After Friedrich’s passing in 1986, his son Gernot and daughter-in-law Jutta injected the business with new life — inspired by the enthusiastic response of the public who would buy their brushes at local markets. Today, Redecker is run by its third generation — still honouring its origins through the skilled manufacture of beautifully made brushes using traditional techniques and natural, sustainable materials — simple, heirloom quality pieces to elevate everyday rituals.
Many of the brushes created by Redecker use tried and tested methods. The wooden body of the brush is divided into halves: the base, into which the stocking (bristles and related fill material) is pulled, has conical holes. The top has none since it is later put into place to hide the pull-in wire.

First, the wire is passed through the first hole of the brush and a loop is made for the first bundle of stocking. Then, the brushmaker must grasp the correct amount of stocking material in order to be able to fill out the the individual holes in the body of the brush. For this purpose, a brush compartment machine serves to divide the material into uniform bundles.
The material is laid into the wire loop which is then pulled into the body of the brush together with the stocking. In this way, the hole is filled. The wire is inserted into the holes in a certain order and the body of the brush is thus filled with material, loop by loop. After every finished row, the material must be cut to the proper length. So it continues, hole by hole, until the brush body is fully threaded. At the end, the wire is stitched up so that it cannot come undone. The top is screwed on and the brush is finished.
Brushes are still bound using time-honored traditional wire-loop techniques and carefully cut by hand.

Caring for natural brushes

With a little simple care, natural handmade brushes will age beautifully. If used wet, allow the brush to dry thoroughly between uses with its bristles pointing down, and from time to time oil the wood once dry. We recommend a food grade oil or cold pressed linseed oil, applied with a cloth (if linseed oil is used make sure to rinse the cloth properly in water to avoid fire risk). Let the oil soak well into the wood before using the brush again. If necessary, clean the brush with washing-up liquid and warm water, using a comb if necessary to clear debris. Remove as much moisture as possible with a towel, then leave to air dry, hanging up or resting on its bristles.

Using natural bristle brushes

Use natural bristle and feather dusters with light, sweeping motions and a top-to-bottom room sequence to trap dust via static electricity without scattering it into the air.Natural ostrich feather dusters and bristle brushes work best for maintenance dusting, intricate knick-knacks, and delicate surfaces.
