Darning Mushroom

Darning Mushroom
Use & Maintenance
A darning mushroom or egg is a small, hard handheld tool placed inside clothing to stretch the fabric and provide a stable surface when repairing holes or worn-out areas. They create tension by holding knitted or woven fabric taut so your stitches stay neat and flat. They also protect your hands by sitting underneath the hole so you don't accidentally poke your fingers with the needle.

By preserving the natural curve of garments like socks or sweaters while you weave a patch over the damage, this kind of aid can help you to create a seamless and tidy mend. Darning eggs, as the name suggests, are egg-shaped with a small surface area which makes them ideal for tight spaces like the toes and heels of socks. Similarly darning mushrooms are mushroom-shaped with a handle and a broader, flatter cap and are best for larger areas like sweater elbows or flat fabric.
To use the darning mushroom, turn the garment inside out. Place the mushroom head inside, positioning the hole over the centre of the dome. Ensure the fabric is taut but not stretched, as over-stretching causes puckering. Next, hold the garment in place with your hand around the handle. For better control, use an elastic band to secure the fabric around the handle and thread a darning needle (no knot). Begin by sewing vertical ‘running stitches’ back and forth across the ole, catching the fabric about 0.5 — 1cm beyond the edge of the hole to secure it. Once the hole is covered with vertical lines, start weaving the needle horizontally. Continue weaving back and forth, alternating the pattern on each row until the hole is filled — ensuring the tension is consistent. Once the hole is filled, secure the thread by weaving it back through the repair and trim the excess.

History

A darning mushroom was an essential household tool from the 18th century towards the early 20th century. Counter to the current contemporary culture of fast fashion and industrial textile production, it was common for regular people to constantly repair and mend their clothing and linen instead of discarding them.
