Futagami

Futagami, Brass Foundry
Takaoka, Japan

The Futagami foundry is an historic brass foundry established in 1897 in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, Japan, renowned for blending traditional sand-casting techniques with contemporary minimalist homeware design. The family-run business originally specialised in traditional brass and bronze craft products, heavily focused on Buddhist altar fittings (butsugu), architectural hardware, and marine fixtures. The foundry operates in Takaoka, a city celebrated since the 17th century as Japan’s premier metalworking and copper-casting hub. In 2009, under current leadership, the company partnered with industrial designer Masanori Oji to launch its own considered livingware brand, bringing centuries-old casting expertise into modern daily life. Items are cast from solid brass without artificial plating or painting, allowing the raw metal to interact directly with its environment.

The Futagami Foundry makes its 'ihada' products using a traditional greensand casting method that preserves the raw, textured "casting skin" of the brass. The sand casting process begins with the craftsmen packing fine sand mixed with binding agents tightly around a master pattern to create a detailed two-part mould. Workers then melt a copper and zinc alloy (brass) and pour the molten metal directly into the fine sand moulds. Traditionally this cast metal would then be polished to a shiny, smooth finish — Futagami instead leave the rustic, granular surface, known as ihada — completely raw and exposed. Workers perform only minor polishing where necessary to smooth out sharp edges, leaving no chemical coatings or antioxidants applied to the brass.

The Futagami collection includes trivets, paper weights, bottle openers, key rings, towel rails and shelf brackets, all with a combination of polished and ihada surfaces, creating special pieces that will age uniquely and beautifully. The maker's philosophy centres on "maturation over deterioration." Because the raw surface is untreated, the brass naturally oxidizes and darkens over time with exposure to air and handling, thus developing a unique patina. Through natural oxidisation from touch and air, the uncoated brass deepens into a rich, complex patina that evolves over generations.

Brass

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. The standard ratio is roughly 6:4, but the balance can be changed or additives can be blended in, depending on the characteristics desired.Brass has been widely used for art and machine castings for centuries, for its excellent corrosion and wear resistance, as well as its pleasing color.
