Garden Tools

Garden Tools
Use & Maintenance

Our wide range of gardening equipment is made using traditional metalworking and woodworking techniques that increase the durability and functionality of the tools. While they are robust, a little extra care will help them last longer and work better for you as they are regularly exposed to the natural elements.

A good-quality tool, cared for appropriately, can give many years of useful service, and we feel one good tool has more worth than several poor quality ones — making the work of gardening a much more pleasant endeavour.

Store any wooden handled tools in a dry space off of the ground and away from the rain. This will help prevent mould, cracking, and discolouration. If wooden parts become dry, occasional conditioning with camellia oil, mineral oil, raw beeswax, or our beeswax chopping board conditioner will maintain its health and prevent cracking or splintering.. Metals on garden tools, including stainless steel, may be susceptible to rust or discolouration if left in flowerbeds, or out in the damp for extended periods of time. For this reason we would again recommend occasional oiling, as well as dry storage.
Cultivation tools will naturally become blunted or nicked through regular use. To remove these nicks you can secure your hoe or spade in a vice facing front side up, and can then carefully work nicks away with a metal file according to the angle and direction of the blade. You can then flip the tool and file away any burr, (which is the lip of metal that occasionally forms on the underside of a blade). Repeat this process with a Whetstone for a sharper finish. Make sure to always file away from yourself.
Carbon steel holds a finer edge and sharpens more effectively than stainless steel, making it a ideal companion in the battle against tough pruning and roots. However, carbon steel is prone to oxidisation or rusting if neglected. To avoid, tools should never be left soaking in water, or kept in a damp environment. Thoroughly dry tools after use and oil lightly with a neutral oil (i.e, vegetable, or camellia), from time to time before storage. If rust does develop, a gentle scourer, or Crean Mate (used with oils listed above) can be used to gently push the rust off of the surface.
To sharpen secateurs, remove the central nut, disassemble the tool, and oil. Clean the blade before sharpening so that you can see the condition that it is in. Using even pressure, slide your sharpening tool down the angled side of the blade away from your body. Do not sharpen the flat side of a blade as it will lose its bite. The blade can then be tested on paper. For those that cannot be disassembled, attempt these same methods carefully on the open blade. This same method can be attempted with shears, but care should be taken as they can be very fiddly. Make sure to remove the spring of your secateurs if you can before attempting any sharpening.

Sharpening Tools

Using blunt tools can be dangerous, and can make for harder work. We have a selection of whetstones and sharpening tools, as well as items to remove rust with. We recommend using the appropriate stone for each blade — a flat stone for flat edged blades, or a curved stone for curved blades to enhance sharpening results.
