Japanese Tsubame-Sanjo Hand Axe with Sheath

Japanese Tsubame-Sanjo Hand Axe with Sheath
£95.00
Ex Tax: £79.17
A lightweight hatchet from Tsubame-Sanjo city, of a type thought to have been produced in Japan for over 1700 years. These have a lacquered Kanto oak handle reinforced with a steel strip where leverage might be greatest should the blade become wedged. Double beveled, with an angled gently curving blade, and a deep single beard for a controlled grip at the very top of the shaft, this is ideal for light splitting such as softwood tinder, green-wood working, or for fairly accurate shaping, being too small and light for splitting hardwood logs — that's akin to using a scalpel to chop nuts, not quite the appropriate tool for the job. With a blade of about 11cm and an overall length of roughly 34cm. By purchasing this item you are confirming that you are over the age of 18, and that we may contact you prior to dispatch in order to verify this.

Care Advice

Hand wash only, and never leave soaking. Dry immediately, followed with a light coating of camellia or a mineral oil. Store in a dry environment to prevent rust formation. A sharp knife is a safe knife — use a honing rod to keep a fine edge, and sharpen with a stone when necessary. Treat the wooden handle with a mineral oil when necessary to condition the wood and prevent warping and cracking. Avoid getting leather soaking wet, when it is time to clean it a lukewarm damp cloth will do. If the leather has been soaked it should not be dried with a hairdryer or furnace, but rather dried slowly in a warm location. Oil with a leather conditioner to soften the leather every so often, as failing to do so could lead to cracks or tears. Apply a small amount to a cloth and rub into the leather, covering the whole surface. Use friction to heat the leather, allowing the conditioner to soak in, and leave for 30 minutes. Using a clean cloth, wipe away any excess
