A simple earthenware dish with slipware glaze, made in Oxfordshire by Dylan Bowen, who makes slip decorated earthenware using both traditional and contemporary materials and techniques. Dylan trained with Clive Bowen at Shebbear Pottery before studying at Camberwell School of Art, and has shared a studio in Oxfordshire with Jane Bowen for the past 25 years. Each dish is individually unique, as Bowen's loose, hand-thrown style creates a slightly different shape each time, while the hand-brushed coloured slip creates a uniquely patterned dish. After the piece has been wheel thrown, the clay dries to leather hard, at which point coloured slip (liquid clay) is applied and allowed to dry before the piece is fired, at a relatively low temperature in order to achieve the most beautiful result. A clear glaze is then applied to seal the piece. Measures approximately 14cm diameter x 3cm high. Microwave and dishwasher safe. Slipware creates a softer finished piece than other types of clay, and should be handled with care to avoid chipping.
