Hearth brush, Luka Zajk

A heat and water resistant hand stitched broom of arenga fibre - from the trunks of a sugar palm native to maritime Southeast Asia - fixed within a stock of slow growing boreal birch. Originally for cleaning ovens, hearths, and chimneys (arenga withstands high temperatures well) the brush is ideally suited to cleaning out the further reaches of large fireplaces, as well as such tasks as sweeping leaves from roofs and gutters, and scrubbing hard to reach surfaces. Handmade by the craftspeople of a Finnish visually impaired workers cooperative. About 92cm long, with a head of 23cm x 4cm.
