Joseph Bull is a studio potter based in Wootton, Oxfordshire — not far from the OoU shop. Joseph initailly trained with Knighton Mill Pottery and the Leach Pottery in St Ives, before travelling to Egypt to study local pottery techniques. On return to the UK, Joseph set up his current studio, where he wheel-throws tablewares in a stoneware / porcelain mix, using glazes varying from single-species wood ash to tenmoku and celadon. Joseph also wood-fires his pieces in Oxford’s Anagama kiln, where he regularly takes part in their three-day firing sessions, keeping the kilns going 24 hours a day. Joseph’s self-built salt-glaze kiln produces pieces with the characteristic dimpled salt glaze, bringing a unique and lively finish to each pot.
