Lapuan Kankurit

Lapuan Kankurit, Weavers
Lapua, Finland
Lapuan Kankurit is a renowned, family-owned Finnish weaving mill known for its fully traceable natural materials, high-class jacquard linen and wool textiles, and strong commitment to sustainable, human-scale Nordic craftsmanship. Every raw material used (primarily premium linen and wool) can be fully traced back to its origin. Lapuan Kankurit specialise in intricate jacquard-woven patterns, blending traditional master craftsmanship with modern industrial weaving innovations. Their textiles — ranging from sauna and kitchen collections to blankets — are engineered to endure for decades, actively standing against throwaway consumer culture. They frequently partner with top contemporary designers and institutions (such as Aalto University and The National Museum of Finland) to keep Nordic weaving heritage fresh and modern.
In 1917 Juho Annala (the maternal great-grandfather of the current incumbent) founded a felt boot and slipper factory by the rapids in Lapua, Finland, during the year of Finland's independence. During the 1930s the founder's family acquired their first industrial weaving machines, producing wool army blankets and early jacquard fabrics. In 1973 third-generation weaver Juha Hjelt and his wife Liisa established a specialised weaving mill, naming it Lapuan Kankurit (meaning "Weavers of Lapua") to focus on high-end patterned fabrics rather than cheap mass production. In 1999 the fourth-generation family members Esko and Jaana Hjelt took over at the helm, transforming the local mill into an internationally recognised brand, with the fifth generation joining in the mid-2020s.
Weaving in linen, tencel and wool, Lapuan Kankurit create timeless, beautiful weaves, for every season, pieces to use every day and treasure for life.

Laundered Linen

Linen textiles that are not pre-washed will be stiff and crisp when brand new — this is often a marker of the high quality of the fibres being intact, long, and untreated. After each use and wash, linen becomes softer and more absorbent over time, improving its quality and utility. It is often recommended to wash your linen before first use, to enhance absorbency. Shrinkage will occur after first use in linen that is not pre-washed, normally of around 5%.

Caring for Tencel

When caring for tencel, you must wash the item on a delicate cycle at either 40°C or 60°C in plenty of water; avoid using softener and bleach. When the cycle has finished, reshape the item while it’s still damp. Please note that linen fibres may come off the product during the wash, and the colour of natural linen will become lighter with washing. Do not use a tumble dryer.
