Mihaly Herczeg

Mihaly Herczeg, Ceramicist
London, UK
Mihaly Herczeg is a studio potter based in London, making beautiful hand-thrown porcelain tablewares. Hailing from Hungary, Herczeg was running a popular Organic Hungarian restaurant in New Cross, that Rosemary, serving Hungarian classics like Goulash and Hortobágyi Pancake, when he decided to learn to make pottery (his wife is also a potter and showed him the basics) in order to be able to plate up his culinary creations.
Discovering a natural affinity for throwing porcelain, Herczeg spent several years running his restaurant alongside a burgeoning pottery studio, before deciding to focus fully on his pottery. Herczeg throws beautifully simple porcelain forms for OoU, allowing the material to sing, and the small differences inherent in a hand-thrown piece to shine through.
It takes a skilled hand to throw porcelain as it has fine, non-plastic particles and absorbs water rapidly, making it lose structural integrity and slump or collapse easily. Herczeg’s simple pieces belie a deceptively difficult process.
The simple and timeless pieces in this collection are glazed in a simple, clear glaze which allows the natural qualities of the porcelain to show through.

Further Information

Porcelain

Porcelain is a hard, fine-grained, and non-porous type of ceramic made by heating natural materials in a kiln at very high temperatures. Prized for its exceptional durability, non-porous hygiene and beauty, the use of this material originated in China thousands of years ago. The process of wheel-throwing and firing porcelain to create vessels for use is essentially unchanged today.
